Case Study - Cutting Captioning Time by 83% for a Multilingual Nursing Workforce

How Eir streamlined the captioning and translations of their training content and made onboarding accessible for all employees

1. Client Overview

EIR is one of Iceland’s largest nursing homes, employing over 800 staff from more than 20 nationalities. With a deep commitment to quality care and inclusion, EIR produces a wide range of onboarding and educational video content to support continuous learning across its diverse team.

2. The Challenge

All of EIR’s training videos are recorded in Icelandic — the company’s official language. But with many team members not fluent in Icelandic, there was a growing need to make content accessible in English. Their LMS does not support SRT subtitle files, which means that they have to permanently embed the captions onto the videos. Before discovering Sundra, EIR often resorted to recording content twice — once in Icelandic and once in English — this was often faster than captioning them manually. The full process of transcribing, translating, and embedding captions used to take up to 3 hours per video.

3. The Solution

EIR adopted a new, more efficient workflow using Sundra to generate captions and summaries, and then render final videos with burned-in subtitles directly from our system. This brought the total production time down to just 30 minutes per video — a 6× improvement over their previous method.

We now support EIR with:

  • Accurate transcription of Icelandic audio
  • English translation for accessibility
  • Burned-in captions to meet Eloomi LMS requirements
  • Text summaries for each video to support written onboarding and reference materials

4. The Results

  • 83% time savings per video (from 3 hours to 30 minutes)
  • ✅ 100% of training videos now accessible in both Icelandic and English
  • ✅ Eliminated the need to record duplicate videos
  • ✅ Enhanced onboarding experience for international staff

“We went from spending 3 hours per video to just 30 minutes. And we no longer have to record everything twice — this saves us so much time.”
— Ásta Sigrún Friðriksdóttir, HR specialist, EIR

5. Why It Worked

This approach offered speed, clarity, and simplicity. By eliminating double work and manual effort, EIR could keep creating in Icelandic while ensuring every employee had access — in their own language — within a fraction of the time.
